DIY LP Gecko Hide 2! by Artsywolven DIY LP Gecko Hide 2! by Artsywolven
So here's hide #2! Looks better than the first one, but I think part of that may have to do with having it all be "rock", rather than throwing tree roots in there.

Really excited to build the next set for my gecko, thinking of going with a lighter scheme and building it specifically geared for climbing and exploring, which he seems really fond of. A bored gecko is a sad gecko. D:

But yep! Used insulation foam, a butter knife to cut it/shape it, sculpy for details, black base coat of paint, and then various shades of brown and tan. (: Letting it air out at the moment, in a day or so I'll put it in his tank. This one has a viewing hole on the opposite side that isn't shown, so that I don't need to pick up the hide to find him/watch him. (:

I absolutely love these! I've been contemplating making some for my Leopard gecko and bearded dragon! Half the things that are sold, I don't really like...or are ridiculously expensive.
But yours came out beautifully! Awesome job!! :D

Thank you!

It's definitely worth trying to make your own (these took me forever, I need something made to cut this stuff - a butter knife ended up in cutting myself quite a lot), although they really do need some kind of water proof coat before you put them in - mine are more or less ruined at this point from Rem switching his bathroom spot to be on top of them at one point or another. Spot cleaning works, but it makes it difficult to actually clean/sanitize.

I'm right with you on the ones that are sold!! They're just flat out ugly, not big enough/small enough, not exactly what you're looking for, etc.. or yea, really crazy expensive. ): Have you found any really neat ones, though? Online or anything?

I've been looking for some sort of tutorial for making them, like what paints and sealants would be best, especially for what would be going into a live animals tank!
Haha, Abyss [my gecko] hasn't changed her spot at all, even when I rearrange some things in her cage. She's dead set on one corner! Hahaha

Exactly! I was trying to find ones big enough for my beardie to climb on and be able to sit comfortably, but I'm having difficulty doing so. Abyss doesn't/can't climb anymore, so I generally had limited tall decor in her tank...
No, I haven't really found any neat ones just yet, if I do, a lot of them are made by the owner or are custom built. :C
You would think Pet stores would have a larger and better variety of choices, especially since they revolve around animals!
I mean, they have some neat fish tank decorations, but I don't know how well they would withstand heat...and they're really expensive too. :T

Here y'go! All uploaded - not the best of pics, I'll have to take some more later if I can find some decent light to do them in. < 333 It's very difficult to see the markings on his back in these. (:

I'll nab a pic of the tank in a bit! I'm actually planning on changing it, since he threw up his meal from last night this morning, accompanied by quite a bit of sand~ so I'll be making a new set of pieces that covers most of the floor to minimize ingesting sand. XD;; So these hides are just here until I can get a more suitable set in! (:
